Council and committee volunteer nominations and elections

91Ó°¿ârelies on engaged members to move its mission forward, working in partnership with its professional staff. The organization is led by Council, which has all the powers and duties of a board of directors. Council creates and charges committees comprised of member volunteers to inform and implement a host of programs. Terms for volunteers begin July 1 of each year, and term length varies by position and volunteer body.

Elections

ASBMB’s election for elected volunteer positions will open May 13 and close June 10. Eligible voting members will receive a unique voting link from invitations@mail.electionbuddy.com by May 13.

91Ó°¿âelections are held annually in accordance with the 91Ó°¿âbylaws. Positions selected by election are President, Treasurer, Secretary, and select positions on the Publications and Nominating Committees. Per 91Ó°¿âbylaws, only active 91Ó°¿âregular or industry members are eligible to stand for election.

The Nominating Committee builds a ballot for election each year. Once a ballot is composed, it is shared with voting-eligible members of ASBMB: regular, industry, early-career and emeritus members. A plurality of the votes cast shall be necessary to elect, and in case of a tie vote the decision shall be made by lot. The ballot includes no less than two nominees for each vacant position. 91Ó°¿âworks with a third-party vendor, ElectionBuddy, to securely administer its elections.

Committee volunteering

ASBMB’s call for committee member applications closed May 28. 91Ó°¿âwill send applicants an email with the status of their application in early July.

Serving on an 91Ó°¿âcommittee is an excellent way for 91Ó°¿âmembers to contribute to ASBMB’s mission, goals and objectives, as well as expand their professional network and strengthen their leadership and professional skills.

A call for applications and nominations for committee service will be sent to 91Ó°¿âmembers annually. Note: interest for positions on the 91Ó°¿âNominating Committee and Publications Committee is collected in conjunction with the call for elected positions; see the separate section on this webpage for more information.

After the submission deadline, ASBMB’s committees finalize committee appointment recommendations, which are ultimately approved by the 91Ó°¿âpresident and Executive Committee. Although 91Ó°¿âcannot accommodate all nominees for committee positions, we greatly appreciate your willingness to serve and are committed to finding opportunities to engage those who have generously volunteered their time to ASBMB.

Call for nominations for elected positions

The nomination form for terms beginning July 2025 closed in March 2025. Selected candidates appear on a ballot for member election that closes in June 2025. Eligible voting members will receive a unique ballot link.

Volunteer election process

Each year, 91Ó°¿âsolicits nominations (including self-nominations) from members for elected positions within the society. In any year, those positions will include Council members and may include, depending on the year, President, Secretary, Treasurer, Nominating Committee member, and/or Publications Committee member. After the submission deadline, members of ASBMB’s Nominating Committee review the nominations and discuss candidates for vacant elected positions. In its deliberations, the committee considers myriad factors of diversity including scientific expertise, institution and other demographic information. The group also considers factors like relevant leadership experience and previous involvement with ASBMB.
